At St. John’s, Our PE goal is to cultivate a deep body of knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical well-being in our children now and for their future. We understand that physical fitness is an imperative part of leading a healthier lifestyle, which has never been more important than at present. Through physical education at St. John’s, children are encouraged to work hard and aim high to achieve their goals and attain high level outcomes.
It is our intent to teach children life skills that will impact positively on their future. We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that will inspire all children to succeed in physical education and lead a healthy and active lifestyle. We want to teach children how to cooperate with others, as part of a team, as well as improving their own fitness and wellbeing. We aim to ensure children display the characteristics of good sportsmanship throughout their learning journey here at St. John’s.
All of our pupils participate in weekly high-quality PE lessons and sporting activities delivered by our class teachers. Our PE curriculum incorporates a variety of activities to make sure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses through a range of sports. Key stage 2 children take part in swimming lessons, learning how to swim and use basic survival skills in water.
Our planning builds upon prior learning and introduces the children to a wide range of sporting vocabulary. The children in EYFS develop the fundamental movements of PE as well as understanding the importance of exercise and leading healthy lifestyles. In Key Stage 1, the children master the basic movements needed in a range of sports and also develop their balance, agility and co-ordination to perform movement patterns. In Key Stage 2, the children develop their strength, flexibility and techniques to perform routines and to evaluate their performances.
We provide opportunities for all children to engage in recreational playtime activities and attend extra-curricular clubs. Children will have the opportunity to develop their own skills and take part in new and varied sporting opportunities. Children will be able to compete against their peers, including the chance to participate in inter-school sporting competitions as well as improving their own sporting goals. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental, emotional and social well-being.
Our curriculum aims to improve the health and fitness of all children at St. John’s, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that physical education promotes such as teamwork, sportsmanship, self-motivation, resilience and independence. At St. John’s, our impact is for children to take responsibility for their own health and fitness in order to prepare themselves to live a healthy, happy and active lifestyle.
