Music
Overview
As part of a creative, diverse, and inclusive curriculum, all pupils at St. John’s take part in weekly music lessons. Music gives children the opportunity to express themselves in a unique way, which motivates learning and helps build self-confidence. Music is taught by an external music specialist to year 4 at St John’s. Music is delivered in a fun and engaging way by using a wide variety of digital resources and instruments. Lessons are differentiated to meet the needs of individual abilities, giving children the opportunity to progress to the next level of creative excellence. Every child at St. John’s is given the opportunity to play a musical instrument.
Through music, children are taught to:
- listen
- appraise
- create
- explore
- perform
- sing
Year 4 instrumental music lessons throughout our academy are delivered by Mr Cockshott. Mr Cockshott is a musical expert who alongside teachers ensure that all pupils are given the opportunity for effective teaching. In addition to weekly music lessons, music is woven throughout our creative curriculum. Children are exposed to live music, current and former composers and have the opportunity to showcase music learnt at St John’s to parents and perform at external venues. Performances are extended beyond school and into the community, such as in church and participating in local events.
For other year groups, teachers deliver using the Kapow scheme to support.
